debate response

Last class we had a great experience in our debate groups, first with the debate related to the certificate teachers and the new educational law; in this debate my group used several sources in order to demonstrate that is not necessary an education background for dictate classes in schools, facts as the background of fathers of educations (because they didn’t have any). The opposite group demonstrates a good backlash quoting others specialist in the matter, it was a good debate, and we all had a high level of reflection the subject. What I like the most was the respect between the two groups.

In the second debate, there was a misunderstood in the side that the groups had to choose, but at the end it was both groups against the rest of the class; it was a good debate either, mostly because we are all involved in the theme that was debated. It was a debate with no much foundation as the first one; this one appealed to the common sense and our own point of view.

It was my first experience debating in class; I would prefer to counter arguing on the moment against the other group, as in a conversation and not just give ideas as in a presentation. The lack of confrontation made this activity had a weird rhythm, but it was ok. I’ll like to have more of this debate, because my speaking will improve, as my ability to link and set ideas with the aim of defend them.

  1. I really liked the way you analized both debates. However, you did not say who won. I think in the first debate the in favor team won, hahahaha.
It was surprising to see the misunderstanding that happened in the second debate, but as you said it, it was really good because we all knew about the topic.

  2. Carola, even though we all knew about the topic of the second debate, there were some people that didn't say anything. So, I assume that they were all in favour. However, we the audience, were suppose to be against that bill, weren't we?

I agree with you, Juan. If it had more foundations, it would have been more interesting that it was.

    Nice piece of writing!

  3. Yes, it is a bit odd to not be able to reply directly to rebuttals, and this would have been ameliorated if we had organized the debate to allow for several rebuttal sessions. However, it's important to let each side present arguments without interruptions to prevent the debate from falling apart into a disorganized yelling-match!

Watch your use of semi-colons. You should reserve them for linking only very-closely related ideas. Each time you used one in this post, a period would actually be more appropriate because you are linking too-complex of sentences.

  4. I liked your reflection about both groups had respect from each other. Respect is a main value that we , as teacher, have to inculcate our futures students. On the other hand, I totally agree when you mentions " we all had a higly level of reflection". I think we all did a very good effort trying to demostrate how important are those issue for us, specially education in this case.

    Nice job!

  5. I made a spelling mistake. It is " our future students"... " when you mention"... " those issues". I couldn't correct it. Sorry
